Episode 1 – Fictional Presidents
Heroic, incompetent or just plain evil – it’s amazing how fictional Presidents rival those in real life. The boys attempt to unravel what makes a great, or at least greatly entertaining, fictional President.
Episode 2 – Kids Breakfast Cereals
Learn the truth about what BIG MILK doesn’t want you to know as Michael and Richard delve into the sugary world of Saturday morning breakfast cereals.
Episode 3 – Non-Bond Spies
James Bond is a lightweight who doesn’t know how to mix a martini. THERE WE SAID IT. Instead, let’s argue about other spies who are much better at their jobs – or possibly much worse.
Episode 4 – One and Done Bands
Some artists only need one album to create a lasting legacy. In this edition of the Mt. Rushmore Podcast, Michael and Richard present Jeff with their choices for the Mt. Rushmore of One and Done Albums – great albums by bands that only put out one album. WARNING: expect a heavy dose of grunge talk.
Episode 5 – Wrestling Heel Moves
Let’s face it – in wrestling, it’s a lot more fun to be the bad guy than it is to be the good guy. You get to cheat, hurt people and do anything you can to get the fans to hate you. Join us as we review our favorite moves that the “heels” do to get some “heat” with the “marks.”
Episode 6 – Imaginary Features of Your Future Imaginary Home
What are the four features that you WISH your home could have but probably never will? Michael, Richard and Jeff explore imaginary features that would make your house much cooler – if only they actually existed.
Episode 7 – The Worst Kind of Snobs
So you think you’re too good to listen to this week’s episode? What a coincidence – it happens to be about people who also think they’re better than you. Michael, Richard and Jeff run down the most annoying snobs possible.
Episode 8 – Wonders of the World
Some wonders are man-made while others are natural. But enough about Andre the Giant. Let’s talk about the most iconic examples of the most amazing things ever to exist (or not exist) on Earth.
Episode 9 – Fictional Sports Teams
Strap on your football bat and get ready to mix all the rest of your sports metaphors. We’re discussing the fictional sports teams that may or may not have won the game…but they won our hearts.
Episode 10 – Video Games That Broke Your Heart
Video games can give us great joy but also heartbreak that can scar us as children and linger for the rest of our lives. So join us for a trip down Unhappy Memory Lane as we relive some of our most painful video game moments.
Episode 11 – Bands That Should Have Been Bigger
Not every band or artist gets the success they deserve. In fact, some bands are even better remembered for the reasons they didn’t become famous than anything else.
Episode 12 – Secondary Looney Tunes Villains
We love cartoons such as Bugs Bunny, but where would they be without comedic foils? Of course, you don’t want to go to the Elmer Fudd or Yosemite Sam well too many times. The good news is that many of the best Looney Tunes shorts involve some lesser-used characters.
Episode 13 – “&” Partnerships
Partnerships bring out the best in each other. At their best, partners support each other and provide something that the other person lacks. At their worst, they eventually want to kill each other, which is still high entertainment.
Episode 14 – Skateboarding Scenes
Whether it shows the balletic nature of pros doing it right or are laughably bad, a good skateboarding scene can improve any movie. So strap on your helmet, kneepads and elbow pads (safety first) as those thrashin’ dudes Jeff, Michael and Richard take on the most iconic skateboarding scenes around.
Episode 15 – Fictional Wealthy People
If you are making a film, TV show or book and need an instant villain – just add a rich person. You automatically have a source of conflict with the “common people” and a character that the audience already feels like they know. In this episode we explore the many different types of rich people. And Michael shows just how little he does at work by coming up with a comprehensive 3D graph plotting different types of rich people.
Episode 16 – Fathers and Sons
Few things are more special than the relationship between a father and his son. Fathers can be tough and difficult to please, but they can also provide a tremendous amount of support and caring. We take a look at some of the most famous pairings that show the whole gamut of relationships between kids and their dads.
Episode 17 – Recess Activities (With Guest Judge Vivian)
Michael, Richard and Jeff want to discuss the merits of all of the fun recess activities they did as kids. But since they are all old, they realized they needed a recess expert who is a little bit closer to the target audience and has recent firsthand knowledge of the finer points of Recessology.
With that in mind, welcome our first Guest Judge – Richard’s daughter Vivian (age 8). She’s on board to lay down the law and teach the grown-ups a thing or two about how kids like to spend their free time.
Episode 18 – Training Montage Music
If you want to get PUMPED like us, you’re going to need the right music. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered, as we explore the Mt. Rushmore of Training Montage Music. This topic was suggest by Aaron Spacemuseum, a great musician and friend of the show. If you have an idea for a topic, let us know in the comments.
Episode 19 – Famous Sports Fans
Some of the biggest celebrities in the world are athletes, who gain the adoration of millions for playing child’s games. (Except for Australian Rules Football, which is the pinnacle of all that is manly in the world.) But what about when the fans are as famous – or more famous – than the players they support? We explore the work of sports fans who either were already famous or became famous because of their sports fandom.
Episode 20 – Novelty Food Items
We’re Americans. We like our food with lots of sugar, fats, cheese and enough chemicals to stock the labs at Cal Tech. In many cases, this comes in the form of novelty food items that are mash up two things we love, reimagine food that we love, or simply cram as much stuff together into one wad of goodness.
In this episode, we dive headlong into the world of novelty food items. Open up your craw so we can jam as much junk food in as possible!
Episode 21 – Earth, Wind, Fire & Water
No, we aren’t talking about the band that gave us “Dancing in September” and “Fantasy” – although they are pretty sweet. We’re talking about the four elements. It’s what makes up everything that’s around you. Well, technically, that’s molecules and protons and stuff. Who knows! We’re podcasters, not scientists. If you want that, go find Bill Nye.
Join us as Michael and Richard try to determine the four things that best describes each of the elements, and Jeff summons the spirits to make a ruling.
Episode 22 – TV Cop Teams
TV cop shows are about more than solving crimes. They are also about the relationships between the partners. Often, they are mismatched pairs who have to learn to put aside their differences to root out crime. In other cases, Jack Webb is involved and the other guy kind of stands around.
In this episode Jeff gets to play both Good Cop & Bad Cop in a performance that’s sure to merit Emmy consideration, as he goes undercover as a amiable podcast host to take down the nefarious ferret smuggling operation run by Michael and Richard. He’ll win their trust by moderating their discussion of the Mt. Rushmore of TV Cop Teams and then…well, just wait for the final act.
Episode 23 – Muppets (Not Named Kermit)
They are adorable, furry, sometimes cranky and often very bad at entertaining people. But enough about Michael, Jeff and Richard – we’re talking about the Muppets! Whether they are starring in kids’ TV shows, variety shows or the movies, everyone has their favorite characters. (Hint: it’s not Walter. Just…no).
We break down the most Muppety of all the Muppets (with the exception of Kermit, because that’s too easy of an answer) and try to get at the heart of what makes a Muppet.
Episode 24 – Horses
Horses: they can be wild, or talking or dark. But at the end of the day, a horse is a horse, of course, of course. And no one can talk about famous horses like Michael, Richard and Jeff. (As long as they don’t talk themselves “horse”. Good night everybody!)
Episode 25 – Rushmore the Movie
You only turn 25 once! We celebrate our favorite movie with some specific things we love about it. Not just “the music” or something else lame.
Episode 26 – Shitty Candies
Look, we’re going to be straight up honest here – we went through some HELL tasting some of the worst candies imaginable. We choke down Circus Peanuts so you don’t have to!
Episode 27 – Desert Island Discs
…or whatever that hacky trope is. But it’s been so popular for a reason – there are certain albums that are more than just music we like. They’ve become part of our being and a source of enjoyment or sanctuary in difficult moments. No man is an island, but this episode…is? (TRIGGER WARNING – AVANT GARDE JAZZ AHEAD)
Episode 28 – Things About Baseball (That Aren’t Necessarily About the Game)
It’s called the National Pastime for a reason – many of the joys of going to the game are found taking in things beyond balls and strikes. Let us take you out to the ball game to explore some of the most interesting things that happen around the game.
Episode 29 – Stupid Things People Do at Bars and Restaurants
Let’s face it – some people just don’t understand manners when they go out. There are countless ways to offend waiters and bartenders and ruin the meals and drinks of people around you. Richard, Michael and Jeff explore the menu of poor decisions people make when eating and drinking out.
Episode 30 – Best Actors (Seriously, Like Daniel Day-Lewis, and No Shitting Around)
The actor. A man or woman solely dedicated to their craft of taking the works of the world’s most talented playwrights and screenwriters and giving them life. Or, sometimes, they are happy to get a scene in a Fast & the Furious sequel with FIVE WHOLE LINES. We try on the Masks of Comedy and Drama to explore the real – and we mean full on no fucking around – best actors ever.
Episode 31 – Hoaxes
You know the saying: fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, I’ll punch you in the nose. I think that’s right. Regardless, hoaxes have been around along as people have loved making other people look stupid. So, that is to say, forever. But some hoaxes are more memorable and creative than others.
Episode 31.5 – Rushmore of Podcasts (LA Podcast Festival Special Episode)
A bit of a different episode this week – we went out to the LA Podcast Festival a couple of weeks ago and had a great time meeting some old friends and making new ones. While we were there, we decided to ask some of our fellow podcasters about who would be on THEIR Mt. Rushmore of Podcasts. And by “us” we mean Jeff, who basically was a one-man wrecking crew of awesomeness.
Episode 32 – Partying
When it’s time for the Mt. Rushmore Podcast to party, we will always party hard! In this episode, we take a look at the good, bad and crazy things that always seem to happen during a party. Michael is tapping the keg, Richard is yelling at the DJ to cut out that disco crap and Jeff is keeping an eye out in case the fuzz shows to harsh our mellow.
Episode 33 – Annoying Things at Concerts (Says Some 30- and 40-Year-Olds)
You’re all set – you have tickets to go see your favorite band. You’re pumped, so you get there early and prepare yourself for a once-in-a-lifetime performance. Then the show starts and…everything falls apart. Join us as we – a bunch of 30- and 40-year-olds – tell the people who ruin our concert experiences to get off our lawn, and get off of the stage.
Episode 34 – Songs Drunk Women Sing at Karaoke (featuring the Mt. Rushmore Podcast Wives)
It’s LADIES NIGHT at the Mt. Rushmore Podcast! And not in that creepy nightclub kind of way but in a fun karaoke way! This week the topic is Songs Drunk Women Sing at Karaoke, and it felt wrong for a bunch of guys to discuss this. Instead, we invited our wives to break it down. Emily and Sara put in their song slips, and don’t forget to tip your KJ (Karaoke Judge) Jen. Order your Long Island Ice Tea and get ready to jump on-stage.
Episode 35 – Pop Culture Devils
He goes by many names. Satan. The Devil. Lucifer. Beelzebub. The Father of Lies. Mr. Scratch. The Parking Lot Attendant Who Makes You Pay Full Price When You Lose Your Ticket Even Though You Just Run Into Ross For Five Minutes. And there are just as many pop culture representations of him as there are names, likely because the entertainment industry lies clutched in his grip. Or because writers are lazy.
Episode 36 – Fictional Elections
We might wish that the 2016 election was fictional and it might seem like a bad dream, but it happened. So let’s blow off some steam and remind ourselves about some of the best Fictional Elections in history! This week, Michael and Richard debate the relevant issues of the day (i.e. whose Rushmore is better) while Jeff moderates and tries to keep the lies separated from the half-truths.
Episode 37 – People Who Have Been Trapped
Are you stuck in a rut? Feeling trapped by life? Well, it’s better than being stuck in a well or trapped in a cave. Cleithrophobia is the “fear of being trapped” and honestly, it doesn’t seem like it’s that unreasonable. Having to hack off your own arm to free yourself from a massive boulder? Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun. We shine our searchlight on real and fictional people who have been trapped – both in a physical space or somewhere more metaphysical.
Episode 38 – Video Game Power-Ups
One of the things we often remember about our favorite games is the Power-Ups. These are the moments when something truly special happens. Suddenly, you have the upper hand, whether you are fighting masked ninjas or trying to kick your friend’s ass in NBA Jam. This week we put our quarters on the machine and take our turn going over some of the best Power-Ups of arcade and console games.
Episode 39 – Non-Lego Building Toys (w/ Scott Jones)
For 38 episodes, we’ve heard Michael and Richard do battle against in other in trying to come up with the perfect Mt. Rushmore for many topics. Now something unthinkable has happened. Like Hulk Hogan and the Macho Man, the Superpowers have teamed up to fight a common enemy – Disney Channel producer/minor Kansas City celebrity Scott Jones, a noted expert in all things Lego. Except the topic isn’t Legos! In fact, it’s every other type of building toy. Will Michael and Richard’s tag team be enough to construct a win, or will it fall apart? Listen to find out.
Episode 40 – Nonverbal Sidekicks
Holy switcheroo, Batman! Usually, it’s Michael and Richard debating the merits of their choices for a certain topic with Jeff serving as judge. But not this week as Jeff has some HOT TAKES that demand to be heard – even if the subjects aren’t. In an unprecedented move, Jeff and Michael switch places. Now it’s Richard vs. Jeff giving their Rushmore of Nonverbal Sidekicks. Who will win? Only Michael knows for sure.
Episode 41 – TV Theme Songs
A TV show doesn’t have to have a memorable theme song to be known as great – but it sure helps. The right theme song makes an immediate connection with the show. From the first notes of the song, you know what to expect and, over time, it creates a Pavlovian reaction as you instinctively are ready to watch.
Episode 42 – Secondary Star Wars Droids
Sure, everyone remembers R2-D2 and C3PO, but what about the lost souls of the Star Wars universe? OK, they are droids, so technically they don’t have souls, but they are still important, damn it! Richard knows next to nothing about secondary Star Wars droids. Which makes him the perfect judge as Michael and Jeff showcase their nerdery and argue about the merits of some of the lesser but still important robots in the Star Wars world.
Episode 43 – Must Have Christmas Toys
There’s no joy like waking up on Christmas morning to find out that Santa had brought you the perfect present; similarly, nothing is more disappointing than getting Go-Bots when all of your other friends got kick-ass Transformers, or being told that Santa “ran out” of Cabbage Patch Kids so you’ll have to settle for a Raggedy Ann. We look back at some of the hottest Must Have Christmas Toys of All-Time. Jeff’s made a list, he’s checking it twice…and yeah, Michael and Richard have been both naughty and nice.
Episode 44 – Mt. Rushmore of the Mt. Rushmore Podcast’s Season One Mt. Rushmores
Let’s face it: 2016’s been a nightmare. We’re sure it’s just a coincidence that the worst year in recent memory happened at the same time we launched the first year of the podcast. Hopefully, we were able to provide you with a little light entertainment to give you a few hours of respite from the never ending drum beat of suck that this year became. It’s a VERY SPECIAL EPISODE this week as we look back at our personal Rushmores of things that happened in the show over the past 12 months (roughly). Take a listen to find out if your favorite moment made the cut.
Episode 45 – Best Concerts You’ve Been To
Not too long ago, we discussed all of the many annoying things that can happen when you go to a “rock & roll” concert. But yet we still keep going to shows! That’s because when things go just right and everything clicks it can truly be magic. We discuss some of the best concerts we’ve ever been to – for a variety of reasons.
Episode 46 – Movies That Never Got Made
Hollywood releases roughly 248,000 movies every year, and about 10 of them are any good. It might seem that literally any movie will be released as soon as the first scene is shot, but that isn’t the case at all. Many movies are planned – or even start filming – yet never make their way to America’s multiplexes. So let’s celebrate the cinematic masterpieces/disasters that never saw the light of day. Michael, Richard and Jeff are ready to roll action, and we’re hoping the studio isn’t asking for major rewrites.
Episode 47 – Jackets
An article of clothing can define a person – and that’s definitely true when it comes to jackets. Some of the most iconic looks in pop culture history are closely tied to the jacket a person is wearing. Think about Marlon Brando in “The Wild Ones” or Joey Ramone on every Ramones album cover ever and you think about their leather jacket. It’s a very broad topic, which is evident as Michael and Richard take very difference approaches with their choices. Will Jeff be able to wade through it all to decide a winner and who has to wear the Jacket of Shame? (Note: not a real thing.)
Episode 48 – Fake Elvises
Once in a Blue Moon we get an idea for an episode that gets us All Shook Up. That’s the case this week as It’s Now Or Never for us to take a look at Fake Elvises (Elvii?) – whether they are impersonators, fictional portrayals or something else entirely. Elvis is pop culture and the different types of faux Elvises amplify the many different ways he can be viewed. Jeff, as always, is the King of this episode, as he chooses from Richard and Michael’s picks. So Don’t Be Cruel – give this episode a listen.
Episode 49 – Pop Culture That Depicts a Naive and Dated Fear of Soviet Russia
Remember back when we spent every waking moment worried that the Soviet Union would invade the United States or decide to launch a nuclear attack since those dirty Commies couldn’t handle being on the same planet with BLAZING AMERICAN FREEDOM? Man, it sure is good that we don’t have to worry about THAT anymore! We look back at the past – or prepare for the future – by remembering some pieces of pop culture that showed just how frightened or confused we were about the Soviets through the 1980s. So slam some vodka, put on a fuzzy hat and get ready for a pre-Perestroika madness.
And remember: in Russia podcast downloads YOU!
Episode 50 – Mt. Rushmores
We’ve hit the big 50 and to celebrate we’re getting super-hyper-mega-meta. The whole concept of our podcast revolves around the iconic nature of Mt. Rushmore. Just say the name and you automatically understand what it looks like and what it stands for. So it’s little wonder why it has served as a backdrop and been spoofed in so many different places. Join Michael, Richard and Jeff as they check out some fictional uses of Mt. Rushmore before chiselling one of their own.
